Tips To Improve Credit Score Prior To Applying for A Mortgage

Your credit score plays a major role in obtaining a mortgage. Among other things, typically a score of 620 or above is needed to qualify for a mortgage from a bank or lending institution (this is different lender to lender). Here are a few tips that may help increase your credit score prior to applying for a mortgage:

  • Run a credit report at least 6 months prior to applying for a mortgage. Review the credit report for any errors;
  • Do not apply for any new credit cards, lines of credit, or services that require a credit check (this includes credit cards from department stores like Target or Macy’s);
  • Pay down balances on credit cards and other debts;
  • Pay your bills on time;
  • Only use a small portion of the credit that is available to you if possible (30% or less); and
  • Shop mortgage rates in 30 day increments. Banks and lending institutions will run a credit report and too many at once may affect your credit score.

These tips may or may not help you potentially increase your credit score prior to applying for a mortgage. Be certain to contact your lending institution for guidance prior to completing any of the above items.
